Receptive Expressive Language Disorder Q&A

What is receptive expressive language disorder?

Children and adults may speak clearly and fluently and still have a hard time communicating if they have a language disorder. There are three language disorders:

Receptive language disorder

People with a receptive language disorder can’t understand communication coming from other people.

Expressive language disorder

If you or your child have an expressive language disorder, you can’t communicate your thoughts and feelings in a way that other people can understand.

Receptive expressive language disorder

Children and adults with this disorder have both expressive and receptive problems.

What causes receptive expressive language disorder?

Children develop receptive expressive language disorder in early childhood during language development. The condition may appear without a cause, or it may occur due to an underlying condition, such as:

  • Autism
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Brain injuries
  • Down syndrome
  • Fragile X syndrome
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Fetal alcohol syndrome

No matter the cause, children don’t grow out of receptive expressive language disorder. Though it continues through their adult life, speech therapy can help them significantly improve their language skills.

Adults may not have any language problems in childhood or most of their adult life. Then they can develop receptive expressive language disorder due to neurological impairments, such as:

  • Strokes
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
  • Neuromuscular diseases (such as muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis)

As these conditions damage the brain areas that control speech and language, adults develop receptive expressive language disorder.

How is receptive expressive language disorder treated?

Bilingual Speech-Language & Swallowing Therapy provides therapy that improves your literacy skills, which includes the ability to speak, listen, read, and write in a way that allows you to communicate with others.

When treating receptive expressive language disorder, your therapist focuses on the individual skills you need, and then puts those skills together so you can communicate.

For example, your therapist uses different techniques to improve:

  • Articulation (ability to form clear sounds with your tongue, lips, and mouth)
  • Phonemic awareness (ability to identify and manipulate sounds used in words)
  • Semantics (knowing word meanings and how to use them in sentences)
  • Pragmatics (ability to use language in conversation and social situations)

Though it’s important to seek speech therapy as early as possible, the team at Bilingual Speech-Language & Swallowing Therapy can help you improve at any age.

If you need an evaluation or treatment for language problems, call  Bilingual Speech-Language & Swallowing Therapy or book an appointment online today.
